This Privacy Policy explains how the Association of Law Enforcement Chaplains (“ALEC,” “we,” “us”) collects, uses and protects your personal information when you use our online training site at courses.alechaplains.com (the “Site”). By using the Site, you agree to the practices described here.
Who this site is for
Our courses are offered to adults in the United States and Canada. The Site is not intended for anyone under 18 years of age, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from minors. If you believe a person under 18 has given us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account information: your name, email address, username and password when you create an account or purchase a course. Passwords are stored in encrypted (hashed) form; we cannot see them.
- Billing information: your name, billing address, email address and phone number when you place an order.
- Payment information: card payments are processed by Stripe. Your card number is entered directly with Stripe and is never stored on our servers. We receive only a payment confirmation, the transaction ID and limited details such as the card type.
- Messages: the name, email address and message you send through our contact form or by email.
Information created as you take a course
- The courses you are enrolled in, enrollment dates, lessons completed, exam scores and attempts, course completion dates and the certificates issued to you.
- Course reviews you choose to post, which are shown publicly with your name.
- Course evaluations are anonymous. We record only that you submitted an evaluation, so that your certificate can be released. Your answers are stored separately from your identity, and neither ALEC staff nor instructors can see which answers you gave.
Information collected automatically
- Site usage statistics: we use Independent Analytics, which runs on our own server, to count page views and see which pages are popular. It does not use tracking cookies and does not send your data to an outside analytics company.
- Security logs: to protect accounts and the Site, we log sign-ins and account activity, including your IP address and browser type.
- Video playback: course videos are delivered through Bunny.net’s content delivery network. Bunny.net receives your IP address and browser details in order to stream video to you. We also record which videos you have watched and how far you watched, to track course progress.
How we use your information
- To create and manage your account, process your orders and give you access to the courses you purchase.
- To track your progress, grade exams and issue and verify completion certificates.
- To send you account and course emails, such as order confirmations, password resets and course notices.
- To answer your questions and process refund requests.
- To improve our courses and the Site, using anonymous evaluation results and usage statistics.
- To keep the Site secure, prevent fraud and meet our legal obligations.
Cookies
The Site uses only the cookies it needs to work: cookies that keep you signed in, remember your checkout session and protect your account. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking cookies. If you block cookies in your browser, you will not be able to sign in or take courses.
How we share your information
We do not sell or rent your personal information, and we do not share it for targeted advertising. We share it only as follows:
- Service providers that help us run the Site: Stripe (payment processing), Bunny.net (video delivery), our website hosting provider in the United States, and Google Fonts (which delivers the Site’s fonts and receives your IP address when a page loads). Each provider receives only what it needs to perform its service.
- Instructors can see the names, progress and exam results of students enrolled in the courses they teach. They cannot see your payment details or your evaluation answers.
- Certificate verification: each certificate has a verification code. Anyone with that code, such as an employer or agency you share your certificate with, can confirm your name, the course and the completion date.
- Legal requirements: when required by law, court order or other legal process, or to protect the rights and safety of our users, ALEC or others.
Where your information is stored
Your information is stored on servers in the United States. If you live in Canada, your information is transferred to and processed in the United States, where it may be accessible to U.S. authorities under U.S. law.
How long we keep your information
We keep your account, course and certificate records for as long as your account is active, so you can return to your courses and download your certificates. We keep order records as long as needed for accounting and tax purposes. If you ask us to delete your account, we will delete or anonymize your personal information unless we must keep it to meet a legal obligation.
Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Ask what personal information we hold about you and request a copy.
- Correct information that is inaccurate. You can update most account details yourself in your account.
- Ask us to delete your account and personal information.
- Withdraw your consent, where we rely on it.
Canadian residents have these rights under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and applicable provincial laws. Residents of U.S. states with consumer privacy laws, such as California, have similar rights; we will not treat you differently for exercising them. To make a request, contact us using the details below. We may need to confirm your identity before acting on it.
How we protect your information
The Site uses encrypted (HTTPS) connections, passwords are stored in hashed form, card payments are handled by Stripe, and access to student records is limited to staff and instructors who need it. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be posted on this page before they take effect.
